Introduction
Solana is often billed as "the Ethereum killer": thousands of transactions per second, fees of a few cents. That's real and impressive. But in crypto, everything is about trade-offs (the famous "trilemma": security, decentralization, scalability). This module explains how Solana achieves its speed, and which trade-offs it accepts in return — so you can form an informed view, without hype or bashing.
Why Solana is so fast
Solana combines several innovations to reach very high throughput. The best known is Proof of History (PoH): a kind of cryptographic clock that timestamps transactions in a verifiable order even before consensus. Coupled with parallel transaction processing, this lets Solana target thousands of transactions per second, with fees often below one cent.
For the user, the result is concrete: near-instant, near-free transactions, ideal for payments, large-scale NFTs or consumer apps.
Timestamping before the meeting
Instead of everyone arguing about "who spoke first", each person already has a reliable time stamp on their turn. The meeting (the consensus) goes much faster because the order is already set. That's the idea of Proof of History.
The trade-offs: the trilemma in action
This speed has a price. To keep up with such throughput, Solana validators need powerful machines and lots of bandwidth, which can limit how many people can run one — hence recurring debates about its degree of decentralization compared to Bitcoin or Ethereum. Solana has also experienced, in the past, several network interruptions (outages) where the chain halted for several hours.
This isn't a verdict that "Solana is bad": it's the blockchain trilemma. You can't simultaneously maximize security, decentralization and scalability; each network picks its balance. Solana leans toward performance; Bitcoin toward maximal security and decentralization.

Actually : "Superior" has no absolute meaning. Solana optimizes performance; Ethereum optimizes security and decentralization via its L2 ecosystem. The right choice depends on the use case, not a universal ranking.
The ecosystem and uses
Solana has established itself in use cases where speed and cost matter: payments, high-frequency decentralized exchanges, consumer NFTs, social apps. Its ecosystem is dynamic and attracts many developers and users.
As with any crypto, the existence of an active ecosystem says nothing about the token's future price. Here we focus on the technology and real uses — not a promise of return.
